MIRA AT FOREFRONT OF HYBRID POWERTRAIN DEVELOPMENT
by MIRA

The world’s first hybrid MG TF was unveiled at the Motorsport Industry Association’s ‘Clean Racing Conference’ at Birmingham’s ICC. Designed and developed by MIRA, the car redefines hybrid perceptions by injecting real pace on demand, turning the MG TF Hybrid Performance Development (MG TF 200 HPD) into an all-wheel-drive 200 Ps thrill machine.

The existing 160Ps I.C. engine was retained, driving the rear wheels. This was augmented with a forward mounted electric drivetrain, rated at 40Ps. The 200bhp petrol-electric hybrid boasts exhilarating sprint power, having a sub 6.0 second 0-60mph time, and the security of All-Wheel Drive (AWD) traction.

MIRA’s M.D. John Wood commented: “We conceived the idea to produce an enhanced performance car that anticipated environmental requirements, while expanding today’s sports car driving experience. The car achieves this with ‘responsible performance’ where the innovative hybrid solution sharpens acceleration, at no expense in tailpipe emissions, yet also offers customer benefits like all-wheel-drive traction and the low-speed clutchless operation of ‘City mode’.”

The application of hybrid technology has implications beyond motive power. New approaches to vehicle cooling, weight distribution, innovative packaging and styling concepts are all made possible. MIRA engineers engaged all of these facets through a holistic design approach.

MIRA used the revised front-end package to downsize the radiator and revise cooling intakes, seizing the opportunity to modify the airflow by redirecting it through the bonnet. This achieved substantial reductions in frontal lift delivering an aerodynamically neutral package, a key element in vehicle stability. Together, these measures reduced drag by 10 percent, whilst the addition of the front electric drivetrain and associated battery pack provided a front-to-rear vehicle weight distribution close to the ideal 50/50.

Modelling and simulation played a major role in the development of the vehicle. Using state-of-the-art simulation & control techniques, coupled with validation in MIRA’s impressive array of test facilities - the project team were able to deliver a unique ‘right first time’ vehicle within a compressed timeframe.

The high-tech MG TF 200 HPD vehicle illustrates MIRA as a leading Design and Engineering Solutions provider to the transport industries sector.
